Deadlines
The deadline for depositing the dissertation/thesis is 26 months for the master's course, 48 months for the doctoral course and 60 months for the direct doctoral course. This period is counted from the date of the first enrollment in the course.
In exceptional cases, it is possible to request up to 120 days to extend the deadline for the deposit. The merits of the requests will be carefully evaluated by the Program Coordinating Committee (CCP) based on the justification for the extension of the deadline, and on the progress of the dissertation/thesis.
To apply for an extension, the following documents are required:
1. Student's request for an extension of the deadline, specifying the requested deadline.
2. Document presenting the justification for the request.
3. Brief progress report regarding the current stage of the Dissertation or Thesis.
4. Indicative schedule of activities to be developed in the subsequent period.
5. Detailed opinion of the advisor on the application and the report presented by the student.
These documents must be addressed to the CCP.
Minimum Credits
Students in the Master's course must complete a minimum of 110 (one hundred and ten) credit units, 15 (fifteen) in disciplines and 95 (ninety-five) in the Dissertation.
Doctoral students, holders of a Master's degree by USP or recognized by it, must complete a minimum of 180 (one hundred and eighty) credit units, being 20 (twenty) in disciplines and 160 (one hundred and sixty) in the Thesis.
Students of the Direct Doctorate course, without prior obtaining the title of Master, must complete a minimum of 195 (one hundred and ninety-five) credit units, being 35 (thirty-five) in subjects and 160 (one hundred and sixty) in the Thesis.
Special Credits
A maximum of 7 (seven) credits may be granted as special credits for the Masters Courses, 10 (ten) credits for the Doctoral Courses and 17 (seventeen) credits for the Direct Doctoral Courses. Such credits are specified in the items below:
In the case of a complete work published in journals indexed in the Qualis/CAPES system in force and that has a proven relationship with the student's dissertation or thesis project, the number of special credits will be as follows:
a) Magazines in the five upper strata of Qualis, with the student being the first author, with 4 (four) credits.
b) Magazines in the five upper strata of Qualis, with the student being co-author, 2 (two) credits.
c) Journals in the lower strata of Qualis, where the student is the first author, 3 (three) credits.
d) Magazines in the lower strata of Qualis, the student being co-author, 1 (one) credit.
In the case of patent filing, the number of special credits is equal to 3 (three).
In the case of a book or book chapter in the area of knowledge, with ISBN, and that has a proven relationship with the student's dissertation or thesis project, the number of special credits will be as follows:
a) If the student is the first author, 3 (three) credits.
b) As the student is co-author, 1 (one) credit.
In the case of publication of a chapter in a technological manual recognized by official national and international bodies, the number of special credits will be as follows:
a) If the student is the first author, 2 (two) credits.
b) As the student is co-author, 1 (one) credit.
In the case of participation in Congresses, Workshops, Symposiums or other type of scientific meeting with the presentation of a complete work and which is published (in print or digital) in annals (or similar) it will be as follows:
a) If the student is the first author, 2 (two) credits per event, regardless of the number of works presented.
b) As the student is co-author, 1 (one) credit per event, regardless of the number of works presented.
In the case of participation in the Teaching Improvement Program (PAE), the number of special credits is equal to 3 (three), up to a maximum of 01 (one) participation for the Masters and Doctorate courses and up to 02 (two) participations for the Direct Doctorate course.
The student may also request credit for courses taken outside USP (up to 1/3 of the number of credits required in courses) or taken as a special student at USP up to 36 months before the first enrollment in the graduate course.
To request special credits or use of credits, the student must submit a request for use signed by him and the supervisor and documents that prove the activity or discipline attended to the CCP. In the case of subjects taken as a special student, the deadline for requesting and approving the request is 180 days after initial enrollment in the course. All requests will be evaluated by the Program Coordinating Committee.
