History

The Institute of Biosciences (IB) was created in 1969, by the dismemberment of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Languages of the University of São Paulo. Initially, the IB consisted of the Departments of General Biology, Zoology, Botany, and General Physiology.

In 1970, after the publication of the guidelines for University Reform, the Postgraduate system was implemented in Brazil. Here at the University of São Paulo, the university reform aimed at making the education more dynamic, expanding cultural dimensions, introducing a new organizational, curricular and political structures. It was in this setting that the first four Postgraduate programs were created in the Institute of Biosciences: Biology/Genetics, Botany, General Physiology, and Zoology.

Throughout its existence, the Postgraduate program in Zoology has been coordinated by: Claudio Gilberto Froehlich (1970-1972), Gilberto Righi (1972-1978), Tagea K. S. Björnberg (1978-1980), Walter Narchi (1980-1981), Sérgio de Almeida Rodrigues (1981-1983), Liliana Forneris (1983-1987), Erika Schlenz (1987-2000), Fábio Lang da Silveira (2000-2003), Pedro Gnaspini Netto (2003-2007), Antonio Carlos Marques (2007-2010), Marcelo Rodrigues de Carvalho (2010-2016), Fernando Portella de Luna Marques (2016-2018), Daniel José Galafasse Lahr (2018-2021), José Eduardo Amoroso Rodriguez Marian (current).

The Postgraduate program in Zoology was, for a long time, the only PhD program in Zoology in Brazil, and, for this reason, it had enormous influence in the dissemination of knowledge in its field.
